Disabled soldiers belonging to Military Brigades No. 22 in Pa-an Township in Karen State have been raising funds by selling books among the people of Lamaing Township in Mon State. The residents have to buy the books because the soldiers do not leave their homes without selling them.
According to a resident the books are priced between 600 and 900 kyat. The soldiers most of them amputees have been entering one house after another.
“I looked at a few books, but they would not go away. So I bought two books so that they would leave,” according to one villager. If the villagers refused to buy the books, the soldiers would not leave their homes.
The books are on different subjects including astrology, a complete series of the Buddha’s discourses comprising the Sutta Pitaka (Sutta to ward off evil or harm), and homilies.
The soldiers were in full uniform when they came to sell. But their epaulettes were significant and different from the battalions in the army.
Money raised from selling the books was meant for a fund for the disabled soldiers, said the resident.
Brigade No.22 has launched military operations in the area. led by Col. Myo Win. There were several rape cases in Southern Ye township when he launched a military operation there.
