Mon monk examination group asks for funds for new building
Tue 30 May 2006, Banyol Kin, IMNA
Rahmonnyanikaya, the Mon Monk Union is constructing a building at an estimated cost of over one Billion Kyat (US $ 787,401). It is meant for the Monk Union’s final examinations in Moulmein, according to the committee of monks.

Rehmonnyanikaya Union is the biggest Mon monks group among the Mon nationality in Mon state. Over 700 monasteries have joined the Union and thousands of Mon monks come to sit for examinations in Mon Language for their education every year.

They usually struggle for a place to stay when they come for the examination. “We cannot put up all of them at the same time because we do not have enough space in the building” said an abbot Uttama from Dhammakami Monastery in Moulmein.

“We separated into two Dhammacariya groups, the upper level and the lower level. Now if we can finish this building in time for the next educational season it will facilitate the monks sitting for their examinations,” he said.

The construction of the building started in early May 2006 and they collected money from the abbots and received donations from around the Mon state, said an abbot Kesarra secretary of Rehmonnyanikkaya Union.

“This building is not only to be used for the monk’s examination but we will also use it for the Mon summer school when students come from around the Mon state for examinations. Hopefully in the future we will open a Monk University in this building in the Mon Language,” said the abbot Uttama.
