Pork price up because of higher butcher license fees

Increased license fees imposed by Burma's Development Affairs Department on butchers have forced them raise the price of pork although they were unwilling to do so.
The pork bellies, as they are called, paid about Kyat 250 lakhs as license fees for a year to the Development Affairs Department under the Ministry of Progress Border Areas, National Races and Development Affairs for the current year.
"It (Kyat 250 lahks) was only from one area. The department (Development Affairs) got that kind of money from only the administrative unit (a group of villages). If the areas such as the city and large villages are included it will be much more," a pork belly said.
The fees are different and it also depends on the area. The department authorities had said all departments would get the money by sharing the fund, he added.
According to one pork belly, "If we do not pay the license fee, other bellies will. The license is not easy to get. Last year, pork bellies had to give about Kyat 150 lakhs for the license."
The selling price of pork last year was about Kyat 2,800 per viss after butchers paid about Kyat 150 lahks as license fee.
However, a butcher in Mudon Township, Mon State said, they didn't want to raise the price of pork. But they had to because of higher license fees.
Now one viss of pork is about Kyat 5,000. Pork with bone and other parts is between Kyat 3,500 to Kyat 4,000 per viss.
Pork bellies would like to sell at a cheaper price, but they have to pay for the pig apart from the license fees.
Not only pork but prices of essential commodities have been increasing.
