Burma ethnics welcome UNSC’s decision to put Burma on
Mon 18 Sep 2006, Loa Htaw, IMNA
Ethnic Burmese people have welcomed the UN Security Council’s (UNSC’s) decision to include Myanmar on its permanent agenda. The issue was approved by a vote of ten in favour versus four opposed, with one country abstaining on September 15. The ethnic armed group the Karen National Union (KNU) released a statement yesterday welcoming the UNSC decision.

Another ethnic armed group the Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) and the Mon Unity League (Mon ethnic political group) also welcomed and supported the decision.

“The UN Security Council process to discuss the Burma issue may solve Burma’s problem based on freedom and justice” said the KNU statement.

Raymond Htoo, general secretary of the KNPP said “We believe, Burma will change for sure depending on pressure from the UN Security Council and how it takes action against Burma”.

The Mon Unity League (Mon ethnic political group) also thanked the UN Security Council for the decision and said the UNSC has made the right decision to discuss the Burma issue.

“The UN has been warning Burma over the past 10 years to solve the problems but Burma has never listened,” said Mon Unity League secretary Nai Suthorn.

“The government did not care for the UN and extended the term for house arrest of Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, despite the UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari’s request early this year to the Burmese government to release her,” he said.

“The opposition and citizens need to continue and increase fighting even though the Burma issue has reached the UN Security Council” the KNU statement added.

The statement also requested the Burmese government to stop offensives on the Karen ethnic people and other ethnic groups by announcing a cease fire in the country. It also asked the government to release all political prisoners including Noble laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
