NMSP urges release of Mon and other political prisoners
Tue 17 Jul 2007, IMNA
The Mon community has urged the ruling Burmese military junta to release Mon prisoners Nai Yekha and Nai Cheem Gakao as well as 1,100 other political prisoners languishing in jails on the 4th anniversary of Nai Yekha's and Nai Cheem Gakao's imprisonment today.

"If the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) does not free them we will continue to reiterate the call until they (Nai Yekha and Nai Cheem Gakao) are released," Nai Shwe Thein, Executive Committee member of the New Mon State Party (NMSP) said on the Thai-Burma border.

The two were arrested along with another seven people on July 17, 2003 on the accusation of conspiring to overthrow the Burmese military regime.

Mon communities in America, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Thailand joined the families of Nai Yekha and Nai Cheem Gakao in praying for them, the statement said on the 4th anniversary of their detention. They were sentenced to life imprisonment because of organising and educating people about democracy and human rights in Burma.

According to Nai Joe Yae, Central Executive Committee member of the NMSP, Nai Yekha and Nai Cheem Gakao are extremely good cadres of the party. The party had increased its strength because of them.

"Both are different from others because they have revolutionary fervour," Nai Joe Yae who used to work with Nai Cheem Gakao said.

The statement said that they were imprisoned for their opposition to the Burmese military regime and for fighting to achieve social justice and human rights in Burma.
